The Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice invites you to an engaging and eye-opening discussion featuring Dan Slepian, author and veteran Dateline NBC producer, and David Lemus, an exoneree whose story is featured in Slepian’s groundbreaking book, The Sing Sing Files: One Journalist, Six Innocent Men, and a Twenty-Year Fight for Justice. Moderated by John F. Hollway, Executive Director of the Quattrone Center, the conversation will delve into Slepian's two-decade-long journey uncovering wrongful convictions and navigating a deeply flawed justice system.
The Sing Sing Files is a gripping account of Slepian’s pursuit of justice to free six innocent men, starting with a tip from a Bronx homicide detective that led to the exoneration of two men wrongly imprisoned for a 1990 murder. Through years of prison visits, court hearings, and investigative reporting, Slepian uncovered critical errors in the justice system, leading to the eventual freedom of four other wrongfully convicted men.
Exonerated after spending 14 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, David Lemus’s story is one of resilience and hope. His case, tied to a 1990 nightclub shooting, was marred by mistaken witness identification and awed investigative practices. His eventual acquittal underscores the systemic issues Slepian’s work aims to expose.
Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation that will explore the systemic failures of the criminal justice system, the firsthand human toll of wrongful convictions, the resilience needed to uncover the truth, and the quest to right the wrongs of the past in the pursuit of justice
